Adkins was raised by a young single mother in several working-class communities of London. When she was a kid she loved singing contemporary pop music and learned to play the guitar and the clarinet. It wasn't until her early teens, when she discovered the blues-based rhythm singer Etta James and other mid-20th century performers, that she began to think about a career in music. While she honed her talents at a secondary school funded by the government for performing arts, a friend began posting songs Adkins composed and recorded onto the social networking Web site Myspace. After graduation Adkins' music attracted the attention of record label. She got a contract in the year 2006 with XL Recordings.
